At The Movies

March 2010:

Avatar – 12A

Reviews:

When all the hype and hullabaloo about Avatar calms down, we will be left with a film that’s no masterpiece, but still well worth seeing.

4/5 stars.

- Cosmo Landesman from the Sunday Times.

Avatar is James Cameron doing what he does best – blowing things up with awesome special effects, while tying the set pieces together with a story worth telling. The king of the (sci-fi) world is back. Long live the king!

4/5 stars.

-Rich Phippen from Sky Movies

The Spy Next Door – PG

Reviews:

The closing credit outakes are the best part of this feeble effort.

2/5stars

-Henry Fitzherbert from the Daily Express

When even the out-take bloopers over the final credits are weak, you know you’ve got a pretty under-par Jackie Chan movie on your hands.

2/5stars

-Peter Bradshaw from the Guardian.

Kick-Ass – 15

Reviews:

Black comedy is one thing (and I like it well done) but this is far from that. Sometimes shootings are intended to raise a laugh and sometimes the killings are in deadly earnest.

4/5stars

-Louise Keller from Urban Cinefile.

Vaughn directs with efficiency and a good sense of action while Johnson puts in an engaging turn that maintains sympathy and helps paper over some of the plot’s more jerky, episodic aspects.

3/5stars.

-Ben Walters from Time Out.

Alice In Wonderland – PG

Reviews:

The Tim Burton-Johnny Depp combo comes in colors and whimsy, but lacks tension.

4/5stars.

-Jeff Meyers from the Metro Times.

For better or for worse, it’s Burton’s imagination that keeps the proceedings lively, even if its’ not as blatantly humorous as we’d like.

4/5stars.

-Bruce Bennet from Spectrum.

How To Train Your Dragon – PG

Reviews:

But where this highly appealing comedy adventure really excels is with awesome visuals that rival Avatar’s. The flying sequences, such as a dazzling trip through the Northern Lights, are stunning and the battles are equally spectacular.

4/5 stars.

- Alan Jones from the Radio Times.

A fast-paced, funny adventure, offsetting its more grounded scenes with some breathtaking flights of fancy – and in an age when fundamentalism and secularism are constantly at war, it teaches children never simply to believe what they read.

3.5/5 stars.

- Anton Bitel from Film 4
